MU FRTI Announces the Appointment of a New Regional Training Coordinator

Director David E. Hedrick of the University of Missouri's Fire & Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) has announced the appointment of a new Regional Training Coordinator for the Institute for Region H. Angie K. Jones of Maryville, Missouri is the new Training Coordinator in Region H. Regional Training Coordinator positions are part-time positions within the Institute. MU FRTI is a unit within the Division of Extension at the University and is charged with the responsibility for providing comprehensive continuing education training to Missouri's fire service and emergency response personnel. MU FRTI delivers approximately 300,000 student instructional hours of training each year to firefighters and emergency responders.

Jones is a Fire Science Instructor with Hillyard Technical Center, and volunteer firefighter with Maryville Department of Public Safety/Fire Division (DPS/FD). She is also a former training officer for Maryville DPS/FD. She has been an Adjunct Instructor with MU FRTI since 2002. Jones will be responsible for coordinating training courses in Region H (north-west Missouri) which includes the counties of Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Caldwell, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Holt, Livingston, Mercer, Nodaway, Worth. Regarding Jones' appointment as a Regional Training Coordinator, MU FRTI Director Hedrick said, "Angie is a dedicated fire instructor who brings a high level of knowledge and experience to the job. She has a proven record of excellence in training, and we look forward to Angie's continued work with the Institute in this new job position."

MU FRTI Fire Service Instructor of the Year Awarded

Fire Instructor of the Year

The University of Missouri's Fire & Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) presented the Fire Service Instructor of the Year for 2008 – 2009 awards at the annual Instructor's Conference on October 24, 2009. This year's conference was held at the Resort at Port Arrowhead in Lake Ozark, MO.

This year's recipient of the MU FRTI Instructor of the Year award was Dean Martin Division Chief with the City of Columbia Fire Department in Columbia, MO. MU FRTI Director David Hedrick said that, "Instructor Martin exemplifies excellence in fire service instruction and we are proud of his dedicated service with the Institute." Martin has been an adjunct instructor with the MU FRTI program since 1998.

Martin started his fire service career in the military serving in the United States Navy on board an aircraft carrier performing aircraft rescue and firefighting. In 1989 he was hired as a firefighter by the Columbia Fire Department. In 1993 he was promoted to Lieutenant and Assistant Fire Marshal with the department that began his rise through the ranks. He received his Associates of Arts degree from Columbia College in 2000, and his Bachelor of Science from Columbia Southern University in 2008. Since 2004 Martin has served as Division Chief over Training, Fire Marshals, and EMS with the Columbia Fire Department.

In addition to the award given to Division Chief Martin, MU FRTI recognized the first and second runners-up for the Instructor of the Year. Instructor Michael Arnhart, Chief of the High Ridge Fire Protection District in High Ridge, MO, was Second Runner-Up, and David Hall Interim Fire Chief of the Springfield Fire Department was First Runner-Up. Director Hedrick acknowledged the important job that all fire service instructors perform. Hedrick said: "Fire Instructors have the responsibility of preparing the firefighter to competently perform skills and techniques necessary in saving lives and property of the citizens they serve. The potential impact that each instructor can make through each class they deliver is incalculable."

The MU FRTI is charged with the responsibility of providing comprehensive continuing professional education training to Missouri's fire service and emergency response personnel. Last year over 257,000 student instructional hours were delivered in training emergency first responders. The Institute has a cadre of over 200 adjunct instructors.

Kelly Davis Hired as MU FRTI Region D Regional Training Coordinator

The new Regional Training Coordinator for Region D for the University of Missouri's Fire & Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) is Mr. Kelly Davis of Springfield, Missouri. He will share responsibilities for the region with Region D Coordinator Lee Ireland.

Kelly is an Assistant Chief with the Willard Fire Protection District, and President of the Greene County Fire Training Association. He has been an Adjunct Instructor with MU FRTI since 1997. He will be responsible for coordinating training courses in the eastern part of Region D which includes the counties of Christian, Dallas, Greene, Hickory, Polk, St. Clair, Stone, Taney, and Webster.

We look forward to Kelly's continued work with the Institute in this new position as Regional Training Coordinator.

George Smith Retires from MU FRTI Regional Training Coordinator Position

After more than seventeen years as one of the Region D Regional Training Coordinators, George Smith has requested to retire from his position. George was one of the original Regional Training Coordinators hired by the University of Missouri Extension's Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI). During his seventeen years George has been instrumental in coordinating training activities for the Institute in southwest Missouri. His contribution has directly resulted in the enhanced safety and protection of our citizens, state, and nation. We wish George well in his retirement.

MU Extension Fire & Rescue Training Institute's Miller Re-elected as President of FFAM

Director David E. Hedrick of the University of Missouri's Fire & Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) has announced that on May 3, 2009 during the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri (FFAM) 54th Annual Convention held in Warrenton, MO, one of MU FRTI's personnel was re-elected as President of the FFAM.

Jerry Miller, MU FRTI Regional Training Coordinator for Region G, was re-elected to the position of President of the FFAM. President Miller was first elected to President in 2007. The FFAM is a non-profit statewide organization that provides representation for over 8,000 Missouri firefighters. Its mission is to promote the safety and education of firefighters, as well provide a network of resources and information.

MU FRTI Director David Hedrick attended the FFAM business meeting at which President Miller was re-elected. In congratulating Miller on his re-election, Hedrick said that: "the Institute is proud of the outstanding work of its faculty and staff, and their community and organizational involvement."

Regional Training Coordinators at MU FRTI are part time positions that coordinate fire training programs in their assigned regions as part of the Field Extension Program. Coordinator Miller has the responsibility for Region G which encompasses the south-central part of the state. Hedrick said that: "the University of Missouri Extension's Fire & Rescue Training Institute appreciates the support and partnership we have with the FFAM and its Officers. We look forward to continue working together to improve the fire service of the state through education and training."

MU Extension Fire & Rescue Training Institute's Hagans-Reynolds Receives Sayer Award from FFAM

Phil Sayer Lifetime Achievement Award

Director David E. Hedrick of the University of Missouri's Fire & Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) has announced that on May 2, 2009 during the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri (FFAM) 54th Annual Convention held in Warrenton, MO, one of the University of Missouri Fire & Rescue Training Institute's (MU FRTI) personnel received an achievement award for their dedication and commitment to the fire service.

Gail Hagans-Reynolds, Coordinator for the MU FRTI Field Extension Program, received a Phil Sayer Lifetime Achievement Award. The FFAM Phil Sayer Lifetime Achievement Award is sponsored by Volunteer Fire Insurance Services (VFIS) and annually honors an individual whose remarkable achievements in the fire service and community exemplifies outstanding performance. MU FRTI Director David Hedrick said that: "Gail's dedication and exceptional work in maximizing the availability and delivery of subsidized statewide fire training has been a key factor in meeting the training needs of Missouri's fire service. I believe her outstanding twenty years of service in enabling training to the state's fire and emergency service responders exemplifies the performance standard of achievement that is the true meaning of the Phil Sayer Lifetime Achievement Award."

The Phil Sayer Lifetime Achievement Award is named in memory of Galt (MO) Fire Protection District Fire Chief Phil Sayer who passed away in 2007. Chief Sayer served with the Galt Fire Department for over 40 years, and had served in numerous positions in the different fire service organizations in the state including the FFAM. Chief Sayer was also a long time Adjunct Instructor with MU FRTI, as well as a past Regional Coordinator. MU FRTI His dedication and service to the fire service of Missouri made a lasting positive impact on the safety and protection of the state's fire and emergency responders and the citizens they serve.

Hedrick said that: "Coordinator Hagans-Reynolds' dedication to increasing the safety, training, and professionalism of the fire service has been evidenced by her work and assistance with fire departments across the state, as well as her involvement with local, state, and national fire organizations." Coordinator Hagans-Reynolds began working for MU FRTI in 1989, and was promoted to Coordinator for the Field Extension Training Program in 2007.

MU Extension Fire & Rescue Training Institute's Jeff Broombaugh Receives Fire Fighter of the Year Award from FFAM

Director David E. Hedrick of the University of Missouri's Fire & Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) has announced that on May 2, 2009 during the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri (FFAM) 54th Annual Convention held in Warrenton, MO, one of the University of Missouri Fire & Rescue Training Institute's (MU FRTI) personnel received a recognition award for their dedication and commitment to the fire service.

Jeffrey L. Broombaugh, Regional Training Coordinator in Region C, received the FFAM Fire Fighter of the Year Award for 2009. Coordinator Broombaugh works for the Rock Community Fire Protection District in Arnold, MO where he holds the rank of Captain, and volunteers as a Lieutenant with the Desoto Rural Fire Protection District. His dedicated work to his fire departments, region, and the training of fire fighters statewide led to his receiving the award.

MU FRTI Director David Hedrick said that: "Regional Coordinator Broombaugh leads by example. His continued commitment to the education and training of firefighters is evident by the countless hours of instruction he has provided the state's fire service. Broombaugh's dedication to his fire department and community along with his willingness to share his knowledge and expertise with other emergency service responders exemplifies the true profession of firefighter."

Coordinator Broombaugh began his fire service career the 1980s and has progressed through the ranks to the current position of Captain with the Rock Community Fire Department. He is a certified Fire Service Instructor II by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety, and has a Masters Degree in Fire Service Administration. Broombaugh began teaching for MU FRTI in 1996 and was appointed as a Regional Training Coordinator in Region C (St. Louis area) in 2008.

Hedrick said that: "the Institute is proud of the outstanding work of its faculty and staff, and Coordinator Broombaugh's dedicated work exemplifies the Institute's commitment to provide the very best in training the fire service of Missouri."
